Now Married, so How to Change Your Name.
If a Bride or Groom - at their discretion - would like to change their surname, this can only be done after the BDM (of the State or Territory in which you were married) has formally recorded the solemnisation of your wedding. Upon this occurring, the BDM can then provide the couple with their Official Marriage Certificate. (Within your Ceremony, the couple will sign and take home their Commemorative Marriage Certificate. However, a different document called the Official Marriage Certificate is needed from the BDM to officially provide proof of identity when telling organisations about an intended new surname name.)

Once in receipt of the Official Marriage Certificate, the next suggested step is to use this document to arrange a new Driver's License (or other proof of photographic ID). Then, this updated photographic ID (e.g. Driver's License) can be combined with the Official Marriage Certificate to most easily officially change a person’s surname in other areas e.g. a bank account.
