Legal Vows vs Personal Vows ... What's the Difference?

What’s the difference between “Legal Vows” and “Personal Vows”?

The Legal Vows (in Australian Civil Ceremonies) are each fiancé (e.g. Bride and Groom) to commonly state … “I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, [full name], take thee, [partner’s full name], to be my lawful wedded [wife / husband].”

Under the federal Marriage Act legislation, these words, with some minor variations allowed, must be stated by each partner to the other for the civil marriage to be legally solemnised. (Note, this is general information only (and not legal advice) and there are other ceremonial legalities also needing compliance.)

In contrast, Personal Vows are completely optional. It is up to each wedding couple to decide to include (or to not include) any Personal Vows. If included, these vows can be of any length and they can occur at any time during the wedding ceremony. Sometimes couples otherwise choose to express their Personal Vows after the Ceremony, away from the guests, and privately to each other.
